How To Find Flowers For Mother’s Day

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Because the Mothers Day comes only once a year, we all want to make it right. And this year you have decided on flowers, so what do you do next?

You could of course go to the local gas station and grab the first flowers you see, you will probably not make your mother happy. Instead you should take some time to find a better option. The best option is the florist, if your mother lives locally.

It might seems like a scary project (especially if you are a man), but you can have good advices on choosing flowers and see them before buying. And it is the best choice (expect for delivering them yourself), because local delivery is normally more reliable.

The best option, if you cannot buy locally, is by telephone or on the internet. Here you cannot get the same advices, so you must have an idea of, which kinds of flowers you are looking for; and how much it must cost. And make sure that the company provides some kind of guarantee, if something goes wrong.

Last Chance Mother’s Day Ideas

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

At the time I write this there’s less than a month left until the Mother’s Day and there’s still time to get the present. But I figure it’s not gonna be long and many will find themselves not having gotten the present and time running out. So here are some of the ideas for the last chance gift.

First of all you will always be able to get flowers, so do that. In addition you can get some expensive chocolate. Or alternatively you can get a fruit basket. It’s a simple gift but a good one nonetheless.

But for it to be a really good gift we need some personal touch. And for this post I want to suggest the idea of a card made of old photos that have a meaning to you and your mother. It’s similar to scrapbooking but takes a lot less time, which you don’t have when we’re talking about last chance gifts.

The best idea to make such a card is to use a computer. If you have any graphic editing skills you can do that easily with a program like Photoshop. Or you can find some e-card templates on the Internet. Then print it out and add it to you flowers or the basket.

The Roots of Mother’s Day

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days, because this day has different roots of origin. To believe certain sources this day comes from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece.

The ancient Romans also had a holiday, called Matronalia, and during this day mothers received gifts. Besides the Mother’s Day, in many countries International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th.

The author of modern Mother’s Day holiday is known to be Anna Jarvis. In 1912 she trademarked phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s day”. She has also created the Mother’s Day International Association.

Anna Jarvis created this day to honor the mother, not mothers in general. Meaning, the day is dedicated for the mother of each person, and each person has to honor his own mother.

The day was not recognized as national holiday immediately. Anna Jarvis first held a memorial for her late mother in 1907. It was a private ceremony. Later she ran campaigns to make this day popular.

Mother’s Day became popular in 1910 when clothing merchant John Wanamaker financed the campaigns. The holiday spread as a day for mother appreciation. It was accepted as national holiday by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 2009.

The Meaning of Mother’s Day

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Every year in May we dedicate one day of the year to our beloved person – our mom. We take the time to show our appreciation and our love. On this day when we pay all our attention to her, especially if we have forgotten to do that during the year.

It’s easy to forget our mother in the daily routine. We go fast to our jobs and back home and often we forget our most important people. It is a great tradition to remember them at least that once in a year and let her know that we love her.

It is not with our gifts that we show that but by sharing our memories and emotions, paying her a visit and spending all day with her. This day has a deep meaning for her and for us. That is the time to refresh our connection.

The presents given to her, is a symbol of our attention, but it must also show our feelings. The gift is merely a token, but it must have the intent. Some people choose not to give presents, for not to hide the meaning.

The Dark Side of the Mother’s Day

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Mother’s Day as we know it is such an innocent and profound day. We honor our mothers during this day, we give them presents. We enjoy spending time with them and sharing memories. It’s just such a nice and sweet day to celebrate.

But little do most people know that there’s a very sad part of the story. Anna Marie Jarvis will always be remembered as the original founder of this day, and the story would end happily if it was not for the events that took place almost 100 years ago.

On May 12 of 1907 she has held a memorial for her late mother who passed away two years earlier. After that she ran a campaign in her mother’s honor to make the Mother’s Day a widely recognized day. She succeeded and in 1914 it has become a nationally recognized holiday.

As it were, the holiday has quickly become commercialized and Anna Marie didn’t appreciate that at all. In the 20s she incorporated herself as the “Mother’s Day International Association” and claimed the copyright of the second Sunday of May.
